क्यों मनाते हैं देवउठनी एकादशी : 

पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार भगवान विष्णु व जलंधर के बीच युद्ध होता है। जलंधर की पत्नी तुलसी पतिव्रता रहती हैं। इसके कारण विष्णु जलंधर को पराजित नहीं कर पा रहे थे। जलंधर को पराजित करने के लिए भगवान युक्ति के तहत जालंधर का रूप धारण कर तुलसी का सतीत्व भंग करने पहुँच गए।

तुलसी का सतीत्व भंग होते ही भगवान विष्णु जलंधर को युद्ध में पराजित कर देते हैं। युद्ध में जलंधर मारा जाता है। भगवान विष्णु तुलसी को वरदान देते हैं कि वे उनके साथ पूजी जाएँगी।

एक अन्य कथा के अनुसार गंगा राधा को जड़त्व रूप हो जाने व राधा को गंगा के जल रूप हो जाने का शाप देती हैं। राधा व गंगा दोनों ने भगवान कृष्ण को पाषाण रूप हो जाने का शाप दे दिया। इसके कारण ही राधा तुलसी, गंगा नदी व कृष्ण सालिगराम के रूप में प्रसिद्ध हुए। प्रबोधिनी एकादशी के दिन सालिगराम, तुलसी व शंख का पूजन करने से विशेष पुण्य की प्राप्ति होती है।

देव प्रबोधिनी एकादशी का महत्व शास्त्रों में उल्लेखित है। गोधूलि बेला में तुलसी विवाह करने का पुण्य लिया जाता है। एकादशी व्रत और कथा श्रवण से स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति होती है।

देवउठनी पूजा-विधि

इस दिन सांयकाल में पूजा स्थल को साफ़-सुथरा कर लें,चूना,गेरू या आटे में हल्दी मिलाकर पूजा कक्ष में रंगोली बनाएं। 

घी के ग्यारह दीपक देवताओं के निमित्त जलाएं। फिर भगवान श्रीहरि विष्णु की पूजा के लिए द्राक्ष,ईख,अनार,केला,सिंघाड़ा,लड्डू,पतासे,मूली आदि ऋतुफल एवं नवीन धान्य इत्यादि साथ रखें। यह सब श्रद्धापूर्वक श्री हरि को अर्पण करने से उनकी कृपा सदैव बनी रहती है। 

इस दिन मंत्रोच्चारण,स्त्रोत पाठ,शंख घंटा ध्वनि एवं भजन-कीर्तन द्वारा देवों को जगाने का विधान है। 

सुख-सौभाग्य में वृद्धि के लिए प्रभु का चरणामृत अवश्य ग्रहण करना चाहिए। ऐसा माना जाता है कि चरणामृत सभी रोगों का नाश कर अकाल मृत्यु से रक्षा करता है,सभी कष्टों का निवारण करता है।

इस दिन विष्णु स्तुति,शालिग्राम व तुलसी महिमा का पाठ व व्रत रखना चाहिए।भगवान को जगाने के लिए इन मंत्रों का उच्चारण करना चाहिए-

मंत्र-

उत्तिष्ठ गोविन्द त्यज निद्रां जगत्पतये। त्वयि सुप्ते जगन्नाथ जगत् सुप्तं भवेदिदम्॥

उत्थिते चेष्टते सर्वमुत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ माधव। गतामेघा वियच्चैव निर्मलं निर्मलादिशः॥

शारदानि च पुष्पाणि गृहाण मम केशव।

मंत्र ज्ञात नहीं होने पर या शुद्ध उच्चारण नहीं होने पर 'उठो देवा,बैठो देवा' कहकर श्री नारायण को उठाएं।श्रीहरि को जगाने के पश्चात उनकी षोडशोपचारविधि से पूजा करें।

देवउठनी एकादशी व्रत के नियम 

पौराणिक व धार्मिक मान्‍यताओ के अनुसार किसी भी एकादशी व्रत वाले दिन चावल खाना वर्जित है। जो पूरी 24 एकादशीया है सभी में य‍ह नियम होता है। क्‍योकि एकादशी व्रत वाले दिन यदि कोई चावल खाता है तो उसे अगले जन्‍म में रेंगने वाले जीव की योनि मिलती है। साथ ही खान-पीन के साथ सात्विकता का पालन करना होता है। इस दिन व्रत रखने वाले स्‍त्री व पुरूष को ब्रह्माचार्य का पालन करना चाहिए। तथा पूरी दिन भर भगवान विष्‍णु जी का नाम का जप करना चाहिए। जिससे व्‍यक्ति हो शांति प्राप्‍त होगी। हो सके तो इस दिन गंगा नदी में स्‍नान जरूर करे।

देवउठनी एकादशी व्रत कथा 

:- एक राजा था। जिसके राज्‍य में सभी लोग एकादशी का व्रत करते थे। और उस दिन नौकर, प्रजा, पशुऔ कोई भी अन्‍न नही खाता था। एक दिन दूसरे राज्‍य का व्‍यक्ति उस राज्‍य में आया और राजा से बोला हे महाराज कृपा करके मुझे आप नौकरी पर रख लो। ताकी मैं भी अपने परिवार का गुजारा कर सकू। उस व्‍यक्ति की बात सुनकर राजा ने कहा की मैं तुम्‍हे नौकरी पर तो रख लूगा किन्‍तु मेरी एक शर्त है।

तुम्‍हे प्रतिदिन खाने को दिया जाऐगा केवल एकादशी को छोड़कर। और उस व्‍यक्ति ने हा कर ली। और उसे नौकरी पर रख लिया। कुछ दिनो बाद एकादशी व्रत आया और उसे खाने की जगह फलाहार का सामना दिया गया। य‍ह देखकर वह राजा के सामने जाकर भोजन के लिए गिड़गिड़ाने लगा। की महाराज इस फलाहार से मेरा पेट नही भेरगा। और मैं भूखा ही मर जाऊगा, कृपा करके मुझे खाना दिजिऐ।

तब राजा ने उसे दी हुई शर्त याद दिलाई और कहा की आज तो तुम्‍हे अन्‍न छोड़ना ही होगा। और यदि तुम अन्‍न छोड़ने को राजी नही हो तो तुम्‍हे आटा, दाल, चावल दे दिऐ जाऐगे। और उस व्‍यक्ति को ऐ सभी वस्‍तु दे दी। उन्‍हे लेकर प्रतिदिन की तरह वह नदी पर गया। वहा जाकर उसने पहले स्‍नान किया फिर व भोजन पकाने लगा। जब भोजन बन गया तो उसने भगवान को भोजन के लिए बुलाया।

कहा आओ भगवान, भोजन तैयार है। उस व्‍यक्ति ने भगवान को श्रद्धा भाव से भोजन करने के लिए बुलाया। और स्‍वयं चतुर्भुज रूपी भगवान विष्‍णु जी वहा आ गऐ। और दोनो ने आराम से भोजन किया, भगवान तो भोजन करके वहा से अंतर्धान हो गऐ। और वह व्‍यक्ति अपने काम करने के लिए महलो में चला गया। और 15 दिनो के बाद अगली एकादशी आई। वह राजा के पास गया और कहने लगा की हे महाराज आज की इस एकादशी वाले दिन मुझे दुगना सामान दिजिऐ। क्‍योकि मैं पिछली एकादशी वाले दिन भूखा रह गया था। तब राजा ने पूछा की तुम्‍हे एक आदमी का खाना दिया गया था तो तुम भूखे कैसे रह गऐ। राजा के पूछने पर उस व्‍यक्ति ने जवाब दिया कि मेरे साथ भगवान भी तो खाना खाते है।

और इसी लिए हम दोनो के लिए वह सामान कम पड़ जाता है। तो कृपा करके इस बार आप मुझे दो आदमीयो के खाने का सामना देना। उस व्‍यक्ति की बात सुनकर राज बड़ा ही आश्रचर्य में पड़ गया और बोला मैं नही मानता की तुम्‍हारे साथ भगवान ने खाना खाया है। क्‍योकि मैं तो इतने वर्षो से एकादशी का व्रत रखता आ रहा हॅू और पूजा पाठ करता हॅू। किन्‍तु मुझे तो कभी दर्शन भी नही दिऐ। उस राजा की बात सुनकर वह आदमी बोला महाराज यदि विश्‍वास नह हो तो मेरे साथ चलकर देख लो। और राजा ने वैसा ही किया वह एक पेड़ के पीछे जाकर छुप गया। वह व्‍यक्ति रोज की तरह स्‍नान करके भोजन पकाया और भगवान को आवाज लगाई।

हे भगवान खाना तैयार है कृपा करके खाना खा लो किन्‍तु भगवान नही आऐ। और ऐसे में शाम हो गई। किन्‍तु भगवान नही आऐ। अंत में उस व्‍यक्ति ने कहा की हे भगवान अब आप आ जाओ नही तो मैं इसी नदी में कूदकर अपनी जान दे दूगा। लेकिन भगवान नही आऐ। और वह अपनी प्राण त्‍यागने के लिए नदी की ओर बड़ा। जैसे ही वह नदी में कूदने लगा तो भवगान ने उसे रोक लिया। और उसके सामने प्रकट हो गऐ और उसी दिन की तरह साथ बैठकर खाना खाऐ। खाना खाने के बाद भगवान ने अपने विमान ने बैठाकर उस व्‍यक्ति को अपने धाम ले गऐ। जिससे राजा को यह सिख मिली और वह उसी दिन से पूरी श्रद्धा भाव से एकादशी का व्रत रखने लगा। जिसके बाद उसे भी अंत समय में स्‍वर्ग लोक की प्राप्‍ति हुई।

Why celebrate Devuthani Ekadashi:

According to the legend, there is a war between Lord Vishnu and Jalandhar.  Jalandhar's wife Tulsi remains virtuous.  Due to this Vishnu was not able to defeat Jalandhar.  To defeat Jalandhar, Lord took the form of Jalandhar under the tactic and reached to dissolve the chastity of Tulsi.

As soon as Tulsi's chastity is dissolved, Lord Vishnu defeats Jalandhar in battle.  Jalandhar is killed in the battle.  Lord Vishnu grants Tulsi a boon that she will be worshiped with him.

According to another story, Ganga curses Radha to become inert and Radha to become water form of Ganga.  Both Radha and Ganga cursed Lord Krishna to become a stone form.  Due to this, Radha Tulsi became famous as river Ganges and Krishna Saligaram.  Worshiping Saligram, Tulsi and conch on the day of Prabodhini Ekadashi gives special merit.

The importance of Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi is mentioned in the scriptures.  The virtue of marrying Tulsi at dusk is taken.  Ekadashi fasting and listening to the story leads to heaven.

Dev Uthni Worship

On this day, clean the place of worship in the evening, mix turmeric in lime, ocher or flour and make Rangoli in the worship room.

Light eleven lamps of ghee for the deities.  Then, for the worship of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu, keep grapes, banana, water chestnut, laddus, leaves, radish, seasonal fruits and new cereals etc. with you.  By offering all this reverently to Shri Hari, his grace always remains.

On this day, there is a law to awaken the gods by chanting, recitation of sources, sound of conch bell and hymn-kirtan.

In order to increase happiness and good fortune, one must take the feet of the Lord.  It is believed that Charanamrit destroys all diseases and protects from premature death, removes all sufferings.

On this day, recitation of Vishnu Stuti, Shaligram and Tulsi Mahima should be kept and fasting should be done. To awaken the Lord, these mantras should be chanted-

mantra-

Uttishtha Govinda tyaj nidram jagapatataye.  Tvayi Supte Jagannatha Jagat Suptam Bhavedidam

Utthite Cheshte Sarvamuttisthottishtha Madhava.  Gatamegha Vyachchaiva Nirmalam Nirmaladisah॥

Shardani Cha Pushpani Grihan Mam Keshav.

If the mantra is not known or if there is no correct pronunciation, then lift Shree Narayan by saying 'Arise Deva, sit down Deva'.

Rules of Devuthani Ekadashi fasting

According to mythological and religious beliefs, eating rice is prohibited on any Ekadashi fasting day.  All those who are full 24 Ekadashiya have this rule.  Because if one eats rice on the day of Ekadashi fasting, he gets the vagina of a creeping creature in the next birth.  Along with food and drink, one has to follow sattvikta.  Men and women observing fast on this day should follow Brahmacharya.  And one should chant the name of Lord Vishnu throughout the day.  By which the person will get peace.  If possible, take a bath in the Ganges river on this day.

Devuthani Ekadashi fasting story

:- There was a king.  In whose kingdom all the people used to fast on Ekadashi.  And on that day servants, subjects, animals and no one ate any food.  One day a person from another state came to that state and said to the king, O Maharaj, please keep me on the job.  So that I can also support my family.  After listening to that person, the king said that I will keep you on the job, but I have one condition.

You will be given food every day except on Ekadashi.  And that person said yes.  and hired him.  After a few days, Ekadashi fast came and instead of eating, he was given the face of fruit food.  Seeing this, he went in front of the king and started pleading for food.  That Maharaj will not fill my stomach with this fruit.  And I will die of hunger, please give me food.

Then the king reminded him of the condition given to him and said that today you will have to give up food.  And if you are not ready to give up food, then you will be given flour, pulses, rice.  And gave all the things to that person.  He took them to the river as usual.  After going there, he first took a bath and then started cooking food.  When the food was ready, he called the Lord for food.

Where come God, the food is ready.  The person called the Lord to have food with reverence.  And Lord Vishnu in the form of a quadrilateral himself came there.  And both of them ate comfortably, God disappeared from there after having food.  And that person went to the palace to do his work.  And after 15 days the next Ekadashi came.  He went to the king and started saying that O Maharaj, on this Ekadashi day, give me double the goods.  Because I was hungry on the previous Ekadashi day.  Then the king asked that you were given a man's food, so how did you remain hungry.  On being asked by the king, the person replied that God also eats food with me.

And that's why that stuff falls short for both of us.  So please this time you give me the face of two men's food.  On hearing that person, Raj was very surprised and said that I do not believe that God has eaten food with you.  Because I have been observing Ekadashi fast for so many years and do worship.  But he never even appeared to me.  After listening to that king, the man said, Sir, if you do not believe, then come and see with me.  And the king did the same and hid behind a tree.  That person took a bath as usual, cooked food and called God.

O God, the food is ready, please eat the food, but God has not come.  And so it was evening.  But God did not come.  In the end that person said that oh God, you come now or else I will give my life by jumping in this river.  But God did not come.  And he went up to the river to lay down his life.  As soon as he started jumping into the river, God stopped him.  and appeared before him and sat down and ate dinner together as on the same day.  After eating the food, God seated the person in his plane and took that person to his abode.  Due to which the king got this Sikh and from that day he started fasting on Ekadashi with full devotion.  After which he also got heaven in the last time.
