Pitru Paksha

Know what is the importance of Pitru Paksha and why do ancestors come to relatives from Yamalok

The sixteen days from Poornima to Ashwin Krishna Paksha Amavasya are called Pitru Paksha.  Pitra means one who maintains or protects.  At this time, Pitrus come from Yamlok and reside in the house of their family members.  For 16 days, the ancestors go back with the cosmic energy after taking their part.  In this way a person becomes free from his ancestral debt.

The ancestors residing in Pitruloka located in the south direction in the universe are hungry for reverence and emotion.  If nothing is passed in the Shradh Paksha, then face the south direction in the afternoon and offer water or shed tears in their memory, Shradh will be done.  Shradh Paksha is also known as Mahalaya and Pitru Paksha.

 When should Shradh be performed?

Shradh is celebrated every year.  Every year Shradh starts from the full moon of Bhadrapada and is celebrated till the new moon of Ashwin month.  According to the belief, on the day the ancestor dies, his Shradh should be performed on the same day.  It is believed that those who are ancestors come back to earth for 15 days in the Ashwin Krishna Paksha and when their Shradh is performed, their soul is satisfied.  The Shradh performed during Pitru Paksha is known as Parnava Shradh.  Along with this, it is also believed that if Shradh is performed with full rituals during that time, then one gets freedom from the ancestral debt.
It also has a lot of importance regarding marriage.  Shradh for ancestors should be done in the house where the marriage takes place.  When ancestors are remembered at the time of happiness, then it is necessary to perform their Shradh at that time.  When something is done for the ancestors, only then they get happiness.  In such a situation, in order to please the ancestors, it is necessary that their Shradh should be done.  In the house where marriage takes place, first of all, food etc. should be taken out for the ancestors.  Then whatever work is done after this, all are able to be completed properly.  Pundits have dispelled the misconception of many people of performing Shradh for one year.  But even in happiness, do not leave the ancestors behind and do their Shradh in the same year.  The meaning of Shradh is to give respect, so the more you give respect to your ancestors, the more happiness will come in your house.
